Three addresses on South Bagdad Road hold most of Leander's fall season: 601, 1011 and 1101. Robin Bledsoe Park and its pool are at 601, Veterans Park is at 1011, and the Mason Homestead is at 1101. Old Town sits just north of them, and on the first Saturday of December the Christmas festival takes over 100 N. Brushy St.
Between mid-October and early December, nearly every city event uses one of these spots. Devine Lake Park hosts two exceptions, and Crystal Falls Golf Course hosts a third. A late schedule change has also put three separate events on the same Saturday within a few blocks of each other.
The festival that moved two weeks
When Visit Leander posted its fall roundup on August 28, the 21st Annual Bluegrass & Folk Festival was set for October 2–3. The city's October newsletter, Leander Connection, prints "NOTE NEW DATE" above the listing and gives Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17, 6 to 9:30 p.m. both nights. If you saved the August date, it is out of date now. Use the city's dates.
The lineup stayed the same through the move. Visit Leander lists Midnight Grass and Cooper's Uncle on Friday. Saturday has Strawberry Flats, Bobby Giles & Texas Gales Band, and Hot Pickin' 57s. A Kids Out and About listing gives set times. Midnight Grass plays at 6:15 and Cooper's Uncle at 8 on Friday. Strawberry Flats starts at 6, Bobby Giles & Texas Gales Band at 7:15 and Hot Pickin' 57s at 8:30 on Saturday. The same listing says the festival is for all ages and welcomes friendly, leashed pets.
Entry is free. Food vendors and a bar sell refreshments, and there are bounce houses for kids. Park in the grass lot north of the Library, entering from Sonny Dr. Overflow parking is at Camacho Elementary School, 501 Municipal Dr., with a free shuttle to the event. Visit Leander suggests bringing lawn chairs.
Why October 17 is now crowded
The festival's Saturday night now follows two other city events that were already set for the same day, both nearby. Two of the three carry the same "NOTE NEW DATE" label in the newsletter.
- 8 a.m. to noon, Fall Residential Community Cleanup with e-waste collection. Leander Public Works, 607 Municipal Dr. This year's cleanup takes flat screens, computers, laptops, servers, network equipment, copiers, fax machines, cell phones and monitors.
- 10 a.m. to noon, Floating Pumpkin Patch. Robin Bledsoe Pool, 601 S. Bagdad Rd. The $8 fee covers pool admission, one pumpkin and craft decorations. A "pumpkin wrangler" helps anyone who would rather not get wet. According to the event listing, you register online and can arrive any time during the event. Bring a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and a water bottle.
- 6 to 9:30 p.m., Bluegrass & Folk Festival night two. Mason Homestead, 1101 S. Bagdad Rd.
The cleanup is at 607 Municipal Dr. and the festival's overflow lot is at 501 Municipal Dr., so the same short street serves the morning and the evening. A household could drop off old electronics, take the kids to fish pumpkins out of the pool before noon, and come back to Bagdad for Hot Pickin' 57s at 8:30.
What the Mason Homestead actually is
The festival venue is a working piece of local history. The City of Leander describes it as a restored farmhouse from the 1860s on a 300-acre tract given to Charles C. Mason after the Civil War. The Mason family gave the 3½-acre homestead to the city in 2005. The Texas Historical Commission lists it as the A.S. Mason House, built about 1866 by farmer Alpheus S. Mason, and made it a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1983. Community Impact reported that Leander Parks and Recreation manages the house.
The rest of the year it works as a city facility. You can rent it for meetings, weddings, family reunions, retreats and parties, and historic artifacts and exhibits are on display inside. Its neighbors are part of why the stretch works for events. Veterans Park, 3.3 acres just north of the Public Library and the homestead, honors U.S. military service members and links to the Veterans Wall of Honor. Robin Bledsoe Park, a little south, covers 16 acres. It has lighted multipurpose fields, a playscape, a seasonal pool, a splash pad, a pavilion, an amphitheater, a basketball court and a walking trail.
Those amenities explain why the same few addresses keep coming up. A pool, a stage, open lawn, a historic house and a memorial park all sit within one walkable stretch.
The season, laid out
After October 17, the calendar moves away from Bagdad a few times and then returns.

Unplug and Play runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21. That is Unplug Texas Day, a statewide observance led by the Texas Recreation and Park Society. The city provides refreshments and asks families to leave the screens at home.
October 24 is the season's busiest night away from Bagdad. The Tricks and Treats Spooktacular at Devine Lake Park runs from 6 to 9 p.m. with trick-or-treating, food trucks and a fun zone. No registration is required. The listing recommends costumes, treat bags and comfortable walking shoes. The same evening, Crystal Falls Golf Course hosts Ghouls & Greens Night Glow Golf, with registration through the course's event page.
Devine Lake Park hosts again two weeks later for the Fall Family Campout. Check-in is 5 p.m. Friday, November 6, and checkout is 10 a.m. Saturday. The city calendar lists outdoor games, crafts, a movie, campfires and campout meals. The event listing gives a $35 per-family price with online registration. Families bring their own tent, sleeping gear, flashlights or lanterns and weather-appropriate clothing.
On November 11 at 10 a.m., the season returns to Bagdad for the Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Park, which honors current and former U.S. service members.
December brings the whole season back to Old Town
The Old Town Christmas Festival is the last stop. The Leander Chamber of Commerce and the city host it every first Saturday in December. This year that is December 5, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The day includes the Old Town Rudolph Run, a Christmas Marketplace, the Hometown Parade, pictures with Santa, live performances and local food and craft vendors.
The run starts the day. According to its RunSignup page, it is a chip-timed 5K at 10 a.m. that starts and finishes at W. Willis and Bagdad. The course is flat, and walkers, strollers and friendly leashed dogs are welcome. The page notes that spots are limited. Registration was showing $43 plus a $3.58 service fee. Groups of four to nine get $10 off per entrant, and groups of 10 or more get $5 off per entrant. The dog cutoff for after the race isn't consistent across the Chamber's pages. Old Town Leander's Rudolph Run 5K page says dogs may stay at the festival until 4 p.m., and the festival FAQ says 5 p.m.
The parade page lists a 1 p.m. start, one block from the festival. It links to a route map and points parade and festival parking to Camacho Elementary or the Leander ISD building lots. Camacho Elementary is the same overflow lot the bluegrass festival uses in October.
The festival's FAQ page carries a 2024 date. It allows two factory-sealed plastic water bottles per person, a portable single-seat folding chair, strollers and mobility devices. It bans general-use coolers, outside alcohol, glass, tents and canopies, wagons, and bikes or scooters. Because that page is dated 2024, check the rules and the dog cutoff again closer to December 5. The festival's activities and schedule page still says "Coming Soon."
From the bluegrass weekend through the Rudolph Run, this season keeps coming back to South Bagdad and Old Town.
